Pilates Exercise Class

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise technique aimed at improving what is commonly known as ‘core stability’.

Initially developed by Josef Pilates in the last century, the techniques have since been developed and built upon by trainers and physiotherapists to maximise the potential benefits in terms of improving posture and stability.

Initially quite simple looking, the exercises can be very challenging, resulting in improvements in balance, coordination, stability and breathing control. The technique is widely used by dancers and athletes of all types to assist with agility and control.

Many people find that the exercises are excellent for controlling chronic back pain and other problems, others simply enjoy the feeling of increased mastery of their own body.

Pilates at Sudbury Physiotherapy centre is taught by Leon Stephens, a physiotherapist with over 15 years experience in the field. Leon also trains physiotherapists at post-graduate level in the ‘Clinical Pilates’ approach to physiotherapy; pioneered by Craig Phillips in Australia, this is an evidence based approach to physiotherapy treatment using Pilates based exercise techniques to assess and treat many common musculoskeletal problems seen by physiotherapists.

Classes

Matwork classes of 55 minutes duration for up to 5 people are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, morning and afternoon, as well as Monday evenings. Availability varies from week to week, so please call for more details.

One to one sessions are also available on the same days, again, please call for more information.

Pilates is suitable for anybody, but if you have any specific injuries or problems we recommend you speak to Leon before making your first booking.

Hypermobility

Pilates classes or Pilates based treatment is particularly suitable for people with hypermobility, for whom our more traditional ‘hands on’ treatments are often not appropriate. As a physiotherapist with a particular interest in the area of hypermobility, Leon has extensive experience working with hypermobile people and can tailor sessions to each individual as necessary, from those who are just a little more flexible than average, to people suffering from recurrent dislocations.

Dancers

In addition Leon has worked in dance and musical theatre rehabilitation for a number of years, and regularly teaches Pilates for both trainee and professional dancers. He is also involved in the development and implementation of audition screening at Performers College in Essex and is able to offer pre-audition screening and advice.
